Two panel sessions were hosted at Covenant with each session featuring 7 panelists comprised of Covenant students. The topics for discussion included ‘Using Covenant University’s Core Values as a Tool to Achieve UN SDGs in 2030’ and ‘Diverting the Negative Vibes caused by Drugs to Positivity and Creativity’.
When the Covenant Global People’s Hub was streamed live to the world, the panelists discussed the theme: ‘Solve Global Issues; Take Local Responsibilities’, using the University’s core values as their contacts. Moreover, while highlighting Covenant’s core values of Spirituality, Possibility Mentality, Capacity Building, Integrity, Responsibility, Diligence, and Sacrifice, the hub explained how each specific core value would best serve as an agent of change to the nation and the world at large.
Covenant students who participated in the event expressed delight at the outcome. Fisayo Adeyemi said after attending the Global People’s Summit, he believed in the SDG’s potentials to shape the future of Nigeria, adding that he left the venue of the event with the possibility mentality that the future was bright. According to Edima Esem Samuel, the Sustainable Development Goals programme was awesome and amazing, because it had made him to be more aware of the things going on around the world. “And now, all I’m looking for is a way to be part of the solutions. It has been very enlightening and exposing,” he said.
In the words of Folarin Odejayi, “After attending the Global People’s Summit on the SDGs and even towards the realisation of these SDGs in our country, I have to say I’m really impacted by it. I am looking to the future with optimism. We as students are going to turn our ideas into things that work thereby to turn the 17 SDGs into reality for us.”
Facilitator of the Teach SDGs Entrepreneurial Development Studies practical class, Mr. Emmanuel Ordia Ogbebor, said the Global People’s Summit was an awesome platform for actualizing ‘Agenda 2030’. He stated that one year after launching the initiative to build an SGD community in Covenant, the University was already hosting the UNGA Global People’s Summit. “We are being recognised globally at great pace, which is associated with Covenant as an institution, and actualising Vision 10:2022 is something that is achievable. We ask God to keep giving us speed and more focus,” Ogbebor added.
In her remarks, Ms. Foluke Michael, the Founder/Director of Creative Youth Community Development Initiative (CYCDI), who organised the event, described Covenant students as fantastic, responsible, respectful and disciplined. She prayed that the names of students her organisation had been working with would be heard all over the world by the grace of God. She added that her dream was to struggle hard globally and get some of the children that had passed through her organisation to study at Covenant. “I love this school and I wish I could be a teenager again, so I could start from this school,” she enthused.
