The Power of Family Unity– Part 1

Dear Reader,

Welcome to this great month of August. I pray that the goodness of God will envelop you and your entire family in Jesus’ name! This month, we will be exploring The Power of Family Unity.

What is Unity

According to the dictionary, unity is being together or at one with someone. It is the opposite of being divided. Unity means to be in togetherness or oneness. This is what God intends for you in your family life. A family united in spirit tends to achieve more and move faster than one divided.  The Bible says: Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment (1 Corinthians 1:10). You must understand that no house divided against itself can stand (Matthew 12:25).

Following Facts to Note about Family Unity:

Unity in the family starts with a loving relationship between the husband and wife, which will automatically lay a good example for the children to emulate. For example, when a man and his wife disagree on any issue in the home, it can lead to chaos and division. The Word says: Can two walk together, except they be agreed (Amos 3:3). It is a known fact that children are products of what they see than what they are told. Therefore, when they are exposed to strife, argument and quarrels in their parents’ relationship, it exposes them to harsh realities of life, which they are not mature enough to handle. Some children have taken advantage of the disunity between their parents to manipulate situations to their advantage. When they find out it works at home, they also try it outside; thus leading them to become schemers and the source of most fights between people.

From Scripture, it is clear there is complete unity in the Godhead. God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit were in perfect unison in the creation of the universe and all that is in it. The Word says: And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2). That is the Holy Spirit in action; ‘moved’ upon the face of the waters. We also saw the Son in action in John 1:1-3: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. The Lord Jesus Christ is “the Word.” When God the Father spoke the Word, His Son, Jesus, acted. Therefore, unity is a prerequisite to making anything work, which includes your family.

Unity is God’s nature: He places high value on unity in the family. We are made in God’s image, and unity should be in our nature also. Anything that causes strife in your family cannot be from God but the devil, who specialises in causing disunity, hatred, quarrels and divisions.

Whatever God touches, He unites; whatever satan touches, he divides and destroys. Every plan of the devil in operation in your family causing division is finally over in Jesus’ name!

As someone rightly said, unity is strength, and division is weakness. I cannot overemphasise the power that exists in family unity. Even the devil knows the power of unity, which is why he strives to sow seeds of discord among family members. The sad thing is that many have given him room in their family; no more in Jesus’ name! You must understand that no family fighting within itself can survive.  A football team that intends to emerge the winner in a competition must play with a unity of purpose. So also any family that aims to triumph. As in the case of the tower of Babel in Genesis 11:4, which shows us the power of unity, although for a wrong cause. The people came together to rebel against God and His commandment in Genesis 9:1, to go and be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. God recognises the power in unity; hence, He said the people are one, and if they begin the building, nothing will restrain them from doing so. Imagine if all families were to come together in unity to fulfil God’s commandment in their lives!

However, having unity in your family starts with having God at the center of your home. If you are not born-again, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born-again.

Congratulations! You are now born-again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave or forsake you. With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace, in Jesus’ name!
