Self-Discipline -Part 1

Dear Teenager,

Welcome to the month of June. I pray that God will deck you with His glory and splendour in Jesus’ name! This month, we shall be examining Self-Discipline.

On this journey of life, you encounter different people, challenges, situations and opportunities, and you are confronted with the question of what should be done at every stage in life. The decisions and choices you make at every stage can either make your journey in life smooth or rough. That is why it is important to be self-disciplined. The Word says: Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control (Proverb 25:28).

According tothe English dictionary, discipline is the practice of making people obey rules or standards of behaviour and punishing them when they do not. I define discipline as doing what you want to do when you don’t feel like doing it.

However, self-discipline is the ability to effectively decide what to do and what not to do at a particular point in time. Self-discipline involves sacrificing the pleasure and thrill of the moment for what matters most in life. Self-discipline is one of the most important and useful skills/virtues you should possess as a teenager. This skill is essential in every area of life. Also, self-discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through without changing your mind. Therefore, this is one of the important requirements for achieving set goals, thereby dealing with procrastination and laziness.

Furthermore, possessing this virtue enables you to persevere in your decisions and plans until you accomplish them. It also manifests as inner strength, thereby helping you overcome addictions, procrastination, and laziness, and help follow through with whatever you do.

Why do I need Self-Discipline?

At the heart of every successful person is self-discipline. It is the driving force that moves you despite your feelings.

Self-discipline is a sign of inner strength and control of yourself, actions and reactions.Self-discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through without changing your mind. Self-discipline helps you overcome procrastination and laziness and helps you finish whatever you start.Self-discipline helps you resist distractions or temptations.

However, to imbibe self-discipline, you need to surrender to Christ. If you are not born-again, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born Again.

Congratulations! You are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave or forsake you. With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace, in Jesus’ name!
