Here is a photograph of Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg. They were both Justices in the Supreme Court of the United States until their passing away.
Justice Scalia died in 2016 while Justice Ruth Ginsburg died a few days ago. I write this because they were both the best of friends even they were ideologically at polar opposites. They were rival constitutional thinkers.
Justice Scalia was regarded as the thought leader for the constitutional conservatives(right wing) at the Supreme Court while Justice Ginsburg was that for the liberals(left wing). Hardly will you find them agreeing in judgement on matters brought before the Court but they were best of friends in their personal lives.
They spent Newyear’s eve together every year and took trips together with their families.
Justice Ginsburg once said, “I attack ideologies but not people.”
This it how it ought to be. This is what civilized behavior is all about. You don’t have to resort to personal insults in order to win an argument. Once you descend to that level you are no longer interested in winning hearts for you cannot change hearts through intimidation.
I was once on a flight with a someone in ministry that I had publicly disagreed with his doctrinal position and wrote articles in this regard. The airline had given us seats next to each other on a flight to London. This could have been very awkward and uncomfortable but it wasn’t.
We spent about an hour chatting and we discussed issues in a light hearted way. We didn’t speak particularly on our theology and the reason this could happen was even though I vehemently disagreed with his doctrinal position, I never made an insulting remark or belittled his person. At the immigration he introduced me to his entire family.
We must learn to separate ideologies from personalities. This allows freedom of expression and exchange of ideas which are necessary in building strong communities.
The social media space affords humanity the opportunity to exchange ideas with virtually anyone in the world. This is massive when we understand the role platforms which facilitated exchange of ideas played in developments and innovation.
