HORROR, TERROR, BLOOD… LORD, HAVE MERCY!
A heavy cloud hangs over our region: from Benue to Plateau… from Adamawa to Borno… Gleefully, Death rides the pale horse of horror in the streets everywhere across Nigeria. No checks. Just blood. Tears. More blood.
Horror, mayhem, terror, have reigned so long within our borders they don’t shock us that much, anymore. We are a people slowly desensitized to the evilness of evil, through prolonged exposure to unmitigated malevolence. We are fast losing the capacity to be proportionately enraged at, and rattled by the wanton decimation of lives – innocent lives – within our borders.
Our brothers and sisters simply become statistics once they are felled by the purveyors of terror who roam unchecked in our land. If 40 people are gruesomely massacred and none of them is immediate family or friend to us, we focus on the bright side and move on. It was 40, not 400… in this Nigeria, it could have been 400 helpless citizens – any combination of fathers, daughters, mothers, sons… Nigerians.
Don’t be quick to blame those who now empathize more with tragedies in what you call distant lands, but are seemingly mute in the face of ongoing atrocities (or genocide) in the next village.
You see, slowly but tragically, Evil is capable of taking something away from within-you when it takes something or someone away from around-you.
Sensitivity can die from over-exposure.
So,
Lord have mercy:
May our hearts not grow callous as we labour to cope with shock, sorrow, pain and terror in our nation.
Lord have mercy:
Lest we forget how to be human while we are alive.
Lord have mercy!
Amen.
