SPIRITUAL BOOMERANG
TEXT: PSALM 18:20-26.
?KEY VERSE “With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the forward thou wilt shew thyself froward” (PSALM 18:26).

Indigenous Australians usually kit themselves with a boomerang, a curved flat wood, when they go hunting. Although also used for sport and entertainment, the device is a historical weapon primarily designed to hunt animals. Thrown with a high-speed, the boomerang flies in a curved rather than a straight line. Its long reach and stability are strategic characteristics which other primal hunting weapons did not possess. When it is correctly handled, the tool returns to its starting point. That is its chief quality: the ability to return to its sender.

At a higher spiritual dimension, the passage under consideration expresses the basic principles that should guide man’s relationship with the Lord. “With the pure thou (God) wilt shew himself pure; and with the froward that would shew himself froward.” You get from God what you give to Him. It is a case of reaping what you sow. The boomerang flies back at its sender, not with the intention of hurting him, but simply to report that it is not lost in transit.

A confident David, at the tail end of his life, announces that by and large, he has received mercy from the Lord to live uprightly. God has washed him of all unrighteousness. He has received divine impartation of justification. Now he possesses a pure heart to serve God. As a result of sending purity of service to God, he is expecting purity of judgement from Him.

God’s position is not a complex matter defying understanding. Nor is it a hopeless situation for a sinner who might think his case is closed, because the Lord says He will be “froward” with the “froward.” Only the sinner who dies in his sin has his book shut for mercy. This is a clarion call for sinners and backsliders to return to the Lord in penitence while believers should constantly watch and not depart from the narrow path.

✍THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Beware of what you throw at heaven; it is coming back to you.

COVER TO COVER NUMBERS 5-7.

MEDITATION

A needful check up

  1. Can you pray that the Lord reward you according to your righteousness? vv20,24
  2. Can you claim that you have kept the way of the Lord? v21.
  3. Can you boldly say you have not ignored any of His statutes? v22.
  4. Can you confidently confess that you have kept yourself from your besetting sins? v23.

Lord, search my heart and lighten any dark passions and lifestyle and make me perfect?
Lord, give me power to live a life of pure conscience without rebuke?
Pray for as many youths and careless adults in the Church that are struggling with besetting sins that they will receive determination and power to be victorious?
Pray for divine visitation for new and old members at the Church service?

HYMN Search me O God

1 Search me, O God, and know my heart today;
try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be some wicked way in me;
cleanse me from every sin and set me free.
2 I praise thee, Lord, for cleansing me from sin;
fulfill thy word and make me pure within.
Fill me with fire where once I burned with shame;
grant my desire to magnify thy name.
3 Lord, take my life, and make it wholly thine;
fill my poor heart with thy great love divine.
Take all my will, my passion, self, and pride;
I now surrender, Lord– in me abide.
