The fortieth Oba of Benin, Ewuare II has visited the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) President, Pastor Felix Omobude led New Covenant Gospel Church. New Covenant Gospel Church is headquartered at Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
The visit marks the first to a Church in Nigeria by any Oba of Benin for Thanksgiving after the Igue festival.
Records have it that the Igue festival was originally celebrated as a festival to renew Oba Ewuare’s magical powers while another tradition states that the festival date coincided with the marriage of Oba Ewuare the Great to a wife named Ewere.
The festival Celebrated between Christmas and New Year includes the Oba’s blessing of the land and his people. During the Igue ritual season, the Oba is prohibited from being in the presence of any non-native person.
Previously, a traditional church, the Holy Aruosa Cathedral located at 7, Akpakpava road and established in the 15th Century with a mixture of Christianity and ancient Bini traditions had been tagged the official Church usually attended by the Oba of Benin.
The visit to the 3,000 capacity headquarter facility of New Covenant Church took place today 22nd December 2019.
