Folks, marriage and a competitive spirit cannot mix. Where a husband and wife are competing against each other for whatever reason, it can lead to the destruction of that marriage. If you have a competitive nature, there is a place for such and it NOT in your home. God’s purpose for marriage was not for competition but for help and support. Remember the scriptures tell us that two are better than one (Ecc. 4:9).
Two cannot be better than one if they see each other as opponents. Supporting each other on a team is what makes the team strong; the same applies in marriage. A marriage where the husband and wife strongly support each other will keep thriving! Don’t see your spouse’s success or accomplishments as a threat. There is nothing to be jealous or insecure about. You are one and the same; When one person wins, you both win!
It shouldn’t matter who earns more, who has more qualifications, who has better ideas, who is more spiritual, and the list goes on. Your focus should always be on how to help your spouse become better as you acknowledge and respect each other’s place in the marriage. That’s what creates a solid team!
It is a lack of understanding and an individualistic mindset that makes a husband or wife try to outshine their spouse or downplay their accomplishments or even their role in the home. You both matter in your marriage; you both have equal stake in your marriage. Your responsibility is to work together towards a common goal, for the good of your home.
Please be reasonable and mature enough to talk things through without being disrespectful or condescending. And be humble enough to receive correction or feedback without sulking or being defensive. Doing this is what creates room for a strong sense of oneness that connects you both on a deeper, and more intimate level. If needed, please prayerfully seek counseling. Wishing you God’s best in your marriage and family life! Cheers.
